Project Overview:

  • This project required decommissioning multiple strings of batteries and two power plants.
  • After removing the system, new modified plants and new strings of batteries needed to be installed in their place.
  • The ANS power crew coordinated the completion of this project with the network operations center, prepared the site, removed the old systems, and installed the new systems.

Challenge

This project required decommissioning multiple strings of batteries and two power plants (one +24-volt plant and one -48-volt plant. After removing the existing power systems, new modified plants and new strings of batteries needed to be installed in their place. The new -48-volt plant was required to support both +24-volt and -48-volt systems.

The biggest challenge of this decommissioning and installation project was that a fiber ring routed through this site could not experience any downtime for risk of large scale outages. The ANS power crew coordinated the completion of this project with the network operations center, prepared the site, removed the old systems, and installed the new systems.

Solution

To achieve the +24 volts required to keep the fiber ring operating, two car batteries were temporarily installed at the site. One side of the ring (B) was moved to the new batteries during a five-hour maintenance window. The plants were removed and upgraded, and the other side of the ring (B) was moved to the new modified plant during a second five-hour maintenance window.

This strategy resulted in uninterrupted ring traffic.

Customer Feedback

“The ANS Team did an outstanding job over the last couple of nights at the job site completing the power plant and battery upgrade. Attention to detail, thought out pre-planning and execution of the plan resulted in minimal downtime with no widespread site outages at a site where there was real potential for a mass outage. The quality of the install from cable lacing and labeling to equipment placing and overall cleanliness is much appreciated!!”
